I get many letters from people re Scientology, and this is just one I
thought you might enjoy. It's from someone telling of when they were in
college, and how they feel now, too:
Tory,
I've seen your videos on the internet about your story. I think you are one
of the bravest people and a genuinely nice person. I think you should be
commended for what you are doing. What do you think the average person can
do to stop Scientology or even help people that are in it get out of it? I
think it is dangerous and I'm concerned that it could grow to menace many
people.
Let me tell you my small story: when I was in college in the early 80's, I
partially read Dianetics. I thought it was a jargon-laden
circular-referencing joke. I think I could only get about 1/3 of the way
through it before I tossed it aside. I was studying Computer Engineering and
I thought it was the most illogical, confusing and most poorly laid out book
I had ever read. The mind chart in the back of the book made me disgusted. I
did a paper on Scientology for my philosophy and religion class. The person
at the _____ Scientology Center wanted to know my name, address and phone
number over and over again when I said I would just like to get some
information for my paper. Needless to say, this creeped me out and I did not
give him the information.
I started going to the library and getting my hands on as many articles as
possible. I became more suspicious when a book I read from the library put
out by the church depicted all of Hubbard's great exploits in hokey color
drawings, no official endorsements or actual photographs of him actually
doing the things it said he accomplished. My professor liked my paper and
had me read it to the class. The stories of aliens and the fact that L. Ron
was a science fiction writer elicited some big laughs.
A true fan,
Joe
